avengers67Latest additon: Avengers 67 from 1969. I think it’s the 2nd appearance of Ultron. Picked it up cheap on Ebay, looks to me like about a 60-6.5. Looks great for about 45 years old! I read it the other night, this was the beginning of the era where Roy Thomas was doing a lot of writing, and Stan had become the editor. Early Barry Smith art in this issue, too. Surprised it’s not selling for more. Good for me!

One of my favs that I still own…FF #112  15 cent cover price from 1971.  Hard to find in top grade, since the black cover shows stress marks very well.  I would estimate my copy as Very Fine, probably about a 7.5.  I’ve seen comparable copies on ebay going for about $180.  A 9.6 was on there for $1750.  Doubt they will ever get that for it, but who knows? Perfectly happy with my copy!  I always like the Hulk/thing battles…Benji usually got the worst of it, but I rooted for him anyway.

Went to my first comic convention in a long time…back from when before they weren’t just a bunch of dealers in a warehouse.  I always said I was going to get to one of the big ones, but California is a bit far away…anyway, I took my wife and son to Chicago for the weekend to check out the C2E2 convention at the McCormick Place.  I enjoyed myself immensely, and so did my son.  Big mistake bringing the wife. After 2 hrs she was done with it.  I wish I could have had another day.  Picked up a couple of posters (Thor and a cool copy of Spidey #122), two t-shirts, Thing and Thor, a couple of graphic novels (Crecy by warren ellis, and First Class x-men book),  and a few other trinkets.  I wanted to get a new statue, but didn’t really run across anything in my price range that I really wanted.  Saw a new Marvel Select Thing figure that I will be pre-ordering.

I’m not big on autographs, but I did consider getting in line for Garth Ennis, one of the craziest and best writers out there.  Only thought about it for a moment, however, especially after I looked at the line.  I didn’t go to any of the panels, that’s another thing I’ll be doing the next time I’m at one of these (by myself?).

One of the main reasons I really wanted to go to this one was that it was a real COMIC-BOOK convention, not a hollywood-type thing.  Lots of dealers on hand with lots of long boxes to investigate.  Only thing I bought was a Fine copy of Thor 177, a book I fondly remember from another lifetime ago.

in fact, that will make a fine Random Thor cover:

Super-hero storyline of the year April 3, 2010

It’s amusing to me that lately, I’ve been buying  a lot of the traditional marvel superhero comics that I haven’t read in years.   I hadn’t read cap, thor, or iron man in years.  And my youthful fav, Spider-Man?  not a chance.  I missed all the clone stuff, the MJ wedding stuff, etc.  For a reason I can’t remember, I picked up the Cap relaunch a few years ago, and I guess good writing wins out, because since then I’ve been reading Thor, Cap, Iron Man faithfully, and found them all to be very good.   Now, I’ve even jumped on Amazing Spider-Man, and so far, so good.

I still read my more adult stuff, like Hellblazer, and most anything by Ellis, but I guess Marvel, and DC, to a certain extent, is doing a good job of bringing us long-time readers back into the fray.  That said, I have to say that the best storyline I’ve followed over the last couple of years has to be Iron Man.  “World’s Most Wanted” was very well done, and reminded me why I like reading comics month-to-month, instead of just buying the trade.  I remember feeling the same way when Stephen King published “The Green Mile” in serial form.    The whole segue from Civil War to director of Shield to wanted man was really well done.  I don’t know if Iron Man will continue to be this good, (especially with the movie coming out, which tends to ruin the comic, even if the movie is great), but it has been a great run.

2nd place:  Thor.  The whole “how do we return Thor to the marvel universe” has been very good.   Straczynski really did a nice job.  Hope the movie is half as good!

I bought this comic on a whim, didn’t know much about it, other than JR jr. was a good artist, and millar, well, he’s millar.  I enjoyed Wanted, dislike the movie, and read a few of his other stuff from Marvel.  When I saw they were going to make this a movie, I figured it would be some sort of two-bit fanboy movie.  Then I saw a couple of the trailers and realized, this is going to be  a big hit.  It’s so over the top, that it’s going to really do some box-office mojo.  Sure, like Watchmen, it’s going to be pretty foreign to non-comic geeks, but who the hell cares?  It’s made for us!

Just saw it, like a few million other people or so around the world.

Excellent is all I can say.  It’s very evident the care and time that went into making this. Sure, you can quibble about the adamantium bullets, or other stuff they put in there to deal with the “memory issues.”  but it really does a nice job of showing why he is the way he is, and giving the characters some motivation for what they do.

Yeah, it’s a comic book movie, but I think it really stands on it’s own as just A MOVIE.  Congrats to Jackman, he really did it right.

Looking forward to the new movie.  Reviews are good, surprisingly.  Gotta hand it to Jackman.  That man knows how to get in shape!

I was never a huge wolvie fan, the whole idea of having unbreakable claws was always seemed pretty…weird to me.  Not that being able to climb walls like a spider or turn your body into flame isn’t.  It’s just the idea of those claws and how they would rip pretty much anyone apart.  Ah well….that’s the fun of comics.

I’ve been pretty addicted all of a sudden to playing Gears of War on Xbox live.  I finally broke down and bought a 3 month card (and it turned out they gave me 13 months for it, anyone know what the catch is?)
